Surrounded by beautiful mountains, Elgin’s high altitude makes it the coolest grape-growing region in South Africa (which means the grapes hang on the vines for longer), giving the wines a unique character. Each year, wine enthusiasts flock to the region for the Elgin Cool Wine and Country Food Festival to discover the gems produced in this fertile valley.
This year’s participating wineries each have their own programmes, which include wine tastings, blending sessions, chocolate-and-wine pairings, and more. Visitors are free to wander between estates, allowing you to enjoy what appeals to you most. Pop-up kitchens and food trucks will be offering an array of delicious meals, such as lamb on the spit, picnic hampers, tapas and sushi. Live music – ranging from country-rock, blues, 60s swing, jazz, and a live DJ – will ensure the party continues well into the night.
A kiddies’ playground and tractor rides will keep the little ones entertained, while pizza, popcorn, candy floss and slush puppies will keep their tummies satisfied.
This year’s participating wineries are Almenkerk Wine Estate, Arumdale, Belfield, Charles Fox Wines, Corder Family Wines, Elgin Ridge, Elgin Vintners, Hannay Wines, Highlands Road Wines, Iona, Oak Valley, Oneiric Wine Estate, Paul Cluver Wines, Paul Wallace Wines, Robin Hood Legendary Wines, Shannon Vineyards, and South Hill Vineyards.
Early-bird tickets (R140 ) are available from Webtickets until 28 April, and include a tasting glass, festival programme, access to the participating farms, live entertainment and wine tasting of three wines. Thereafter tickets cost R160, and are available on the day at Peregrine Farm Stall. If you book online, collect your programme and tasting glass at Peregrine Farm Stall before visiting any of the farms.
See you there!
