Tented safari at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Tented safari at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Spend a weekend in the wild at one of Sanbona’s Explorer Camps.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, outside the Klein Karoo farming town of Montagu, is offering guests the chance to experience the great outdoors in the comfort of luxurious tents with these exciting Explorer Camp weekends for the duration of summer.

With its impressive and diverse wildlife (including 650 plant and 216 bird species), guided walks in its Big Five area, ancient rock-art sites and stunning stargazing opportunities in big-sky country, Sanbona is one of the best places in the land to experience a bush getaway.

The first Explorer Camp of 2016 kicked off in October, with the rest of the series running until April 2017. The weekends take place over two nights: arrival on Friday and departure on Sunday morning. Guests also have the option to spend further nights at any of the three lodges at Sanbona.

Into the wild

One of the highlights of these Explorer Camp weekends are the daily walking trails, which are hosted by an armed, qualified guide, who ensures you have a safe, fun and informative experience. Although the distances covered each day may vary, a trail can last for up to four hours, so be prepared!

Also, a game-viewing vehicle is available at each camp. So, your trail might begin on foot  and, depending on the day’s sightings, you might be driven to another area of the reserve to explore.

Bushveld luxury

At Sanbona’s Explorer Camps, you’ll get your authentic camping experience, but you’ll also be well-looked-after and pampered. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and snacks are all included.

Each evening, dinner is cooked over an open campfire, enhancing the safari experience. And after your meal, you can return to your tent, exhausted from the day’s activities, and flop into the cosy bedding that has been laid out for you. Eco showers and toilet facilities are, obviously, on site too, and torches are provided so you can find your way around in the dark.

Safety first

As with everything, safety and sense should prevail, so the trail is not open to children under 16 years, or those older than 60.

If, however, you’re one of those fit-as-a-fiddle 60-year-olds, you can submit a medical clearance certificate to prove that you’re in sound health. Once this has been approved, exceptions can be made to allow participation.

Once-in-a-lifetime experience

Sanbona’s Explorer Camp is an experience not to be missed, as it allows visitors to enjoy a safe, guided walking safari in the heart of the Klein Karoo, where you’ll get up close and personal with Africa’s finest natural offerings.

Importantly, guests will learn about the unique and world-famous Karoo countryside, as well as the birdlife, wildlife, vegetation, natural history and culture, for which the area is well-known.

So, if you feel like an adventurous break from the daily grind, this two-day walking safari – held in the very midst of Sanbona’s Big 5 territory – might just be the solution.
