If, like us, you love a good market, you’ll know that the Mother City is teeming with cool places to hang out in an open-air environment, with good food, good wine, and a bit of shopping on the side! Late last year, we were thrilled to discover that little old Claremont introduced a new spot into the Cape Town’s humming market scene. It’s called The Social Market and, on the last Sunday of the month (during rugby season), it’s where you’ll find creatives, artists, crafters and performers vending their art, designs, fashion and food.
Everything from handmade art and vintage threads to gourmet food, craft beers and specialist drinks will be available for purchase. But, most importantly, as its name implies, there’ll be lots of fun and socialising to be had, as the focus is on relaxing and being inspired by the vibrant, engaging atmosphere among the traders, performers and visitors.
The venue offers free parking and toilet facilities, as well as a Kids’ Corner where little ones can play a fun game of mini ruby, soccer or basketball, while parents relax on the lawn (grab a cushion or blanket on site). There’s also a kids’ jumping castle, where children literally have leaps of fun.
Social is fun
Located next to the Palmyra Junction at The Sharks Supporters Club, The Social Market welcomes everyone – from hipsters and fashionistas to families, students, art lovers and everyone in between.
With its wide variety of unique local art, craft, fashion and design, the market aims to promote and celebrate the creative local community. So bring your family and friends and enjoy a a fun day out in cool Claremont.
Important note: The market usually takes place on the last Saturday of each month, but until rugby season is over, it is happening on the last Sunday.
