Weekly evening runs through the Constantia vineyards

Peter Kirk Media

Turn Wednesday evenings into fundays, as you run through Groot Constantia wine estate.

Autumn is arguably the mildest season in the Cape: sunny days, less wind, and warm(ish) evenings, before winter kicks in. Which is why there’s hardly a better time to sign up for these Autumn Night Runs at Groot Constantia, one of the oldest (and most beautiful) wine farms in the valley.

What to expect

These weekly Wednesday evening events see participants running through the historic vineyards of Groot and Klein Constantia, before enjoying a festive post-race get-together at Simon’s or Jonkershuis restaurants. (The races start and finish at either Simon’s or Jonkerhuis. On 29 March, it will be Jonkershuis, while on 5 April it will be Simon’s turn.)

Because the races kick off just before night falls (6.30pm for the earlier 8km race), bring a headlamp (or purchase one at the start) to avoid any stumbles.

More about the races

To keep things fun and exciting, the race route will change from week to week. Adults and children are welcome, and there’s a choice between either a 5.5km or an 8km race.

Tickets cost between R140 and R165 for adults (R100 and R115 for 18 years and younger), depending on which distance is selected, and can be booked online through EntryTickets. Each race event is limited to 300 race participants.

After the race, over-18s will receive a complimentary bottle of Groot Constantia’s Finisher’s Wine (valued at over R120 per bottle).

So, if you want to actively experience the Mother City’s vineyards at night, head along to the Constantia Winelands for some nighttime running.
