If the word fondue conjures up images of flokati rugs and bell bottoms (and other 70s paraphernalia; all of which are kinda cool in a retro – never hipster – kind of way), think again. Culture Club Cheese, purveyor of artisanal cheese and fermented food, is bringing fondue back! Accompanied by a glass or two of glühwein (mulled wine) or kirsch (a kind of distilled fruit brandy), of course.
On the menu
Husband-and-wife owners of Culture Club, Luke Williams and Jessica Merton, are committed to serving only the best cheese, having travelled across South Africa in search of quality cheesemakers. Fondue cheeses you can expect here include Époisses, Swiss Emmental, Boerenkaas and Gruberg, accompanied by assorted seasonal vegetable dips, lightly toasted sourdough, and a shot of kirsch. (For an extra R40, you can enjoy a delicious pork belly bowl.)
Apart from the fondue menu (R425 for two; R795 for four), you can order delicious plates off the tapas menu, such as duck pancetta and Parmesan croquettes; butter and rosemary-grilled sirloin; and smoked mozzarella and mushroom arancini, to name a few.
Inside scoop Enjoy a complimentary glass of wine with any cheese platter between 2.30pm and 4.30pm, weekdays in June 2017.
