If the notion of spending a weekend at a five-star resort, away from your daily grind, is just a far-fetched fantasy, here’s your chance to make it a reality. Asara Wine Estate & Hotel on the Polkadraai Hills in Stellenbosch is offering one lucky reader the chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime weekend for two, valued at R10 000.
The beautiful, well-appointed 41-roomed hotel and wine estate is situated just four kilometres from the historic heart of Stellenbosch. Each room is an exquisitely designed tranquil haven, with king-sized beds, a flat-screen TV, heated towel rails, free wi-fi, and all the other accoutrements you’d expect from a five-star establishment.
After settling into your luxurious room, you might like to wind down with a leisurely saunter through the estate’s 15-acre lush gardens. Then, as evening descends, relax on the outdoor terrace of the Sansibar Gin Lounge and Bistro. This casual lively eatery, with breathtaking views of the lake, vineyards and Helderberg mountains, serves an array of delicious treats including flat-bread pizzas, ribs, chicken, burgers or salmon, all cooked to perfection in its wood-fired oven. On cooler evenings stretch out in front of the roaring fire in the restaurant’s elegant lounge, which boasts the largest selection of local and international gins in the southern hemisphere – over 270 at the last count! After dinner, amble back to your luxurious room for a delicious night’s sleep.
Enjoy some stellar wines…
Asara, in honour of Astar, Asis and Asase, the North African gods of earth, sun and sky, symbolises the balance and harmony of Nature that the winemakers wish to reflect in the estate’s wines. Danielle Le Roux, Asara’s delightful and knowledgeable winemaker is perfectly positioned to treat you to a tasting of the estate’s delicious wines in its small tasting room, where the wines are the stars of the show. The classic style of winemaking is guided by Asara’s unique and special terroir, and the estate is rapidly building up an impressive list of awards.
…And delicious country fare
After your wine tasting, a good lunch is called for – served under the trees on the terrace of the Sansibar Bistro. You may choose to do a little exploring of the surrounding area, or perhaps spend the afternoon lounging at the pool before being treated to a sumptuous three-course dinner at the newly opened and beautifully decorated restaurant, Mise-en-Place. Its menu comprises a variety of flavourful and interesting dishes, such as salmon and kingklip ceviche, with fresh mango, lime, chilli and avocado; the unusual-sounding poached duck egg and black pudding; watercress and cider-poached apple; Overberg lamb, served with fennel and potato, carrots and peas; and the intriguing-sounding dry-aged fillet of beef, braaied on a green egg!
The following morning enjoy a hearty breakfast at Raphael’s lakeside restaurant before heavy-heartedly leaving this little piece of paradise to return home fully relaxed and rejuvenated after the ultimate weekend getaway.
