When it swung open its doors in the summer of 2013, La Parada on Bree Street immediately became one of our favourite after-work hang-outs. I mean how do you resist a plate of patatas bravas and grilled calamari washed down with a glass of Steenberg Sparkling Sauvignon after a long day?
These days, La Parada is more than just a drinking hole; it’s a fab venue for a fun dinner with friends, whether casual or special occasion, thanks to executive chef Martin Senekal’s new menu. His aim, when he joined the Harbour House group earlier this year to oversee La Parada Bree and La Parada Constantia Nek, was to create soul-satisfying, flavourful dishes that bring people together and create connections. And, after sampling almost every single item on his new menu last week, we can safely say that he’s nailed it – with aplomb. He’s also managed cater to a wide variety of palates (and special requirements), including the Banting community, with an extensive LCHF offering.

The tapas menu still plays a starring role. We were excited to see a new-and-improved version of the familiar favourite Serrano Ham Croquetas (R55) served with whole grain mustard aioli! Exciting new additions include an inspired Charred Octopus Salad (R65) that boasts clever flavour combinations of grilled green pepper, poached tomato, roasted red onion and cucumber; and Roasted Pork Belly (R62) with delicious dashes of rosemary-roasted apple sauce, smoked paprika and honey glaze, pickling onions and the most divine crackling!

There are five lip-smackingly delicious mains – all designed for sharing. The Whole Roasted Chicken (R240) served with grilled sweet corn-on-the-cob, house salad and roasted garlic aioli is familiar and downright delicious. The Whole Shoulder of Lamb (R550) with patatas bravas, house salad, bread and salsa verde is an invitation for you to get in touch with your inner caveman and rip the meat from the bone, mopping up the sauces with the fresh bread, of course. Heaven!
Apple and Walnut Baked Donut (R48)
There are four divine options, including a Baked Vanilla Bean Cheese Cake (R57) for the Banters. Don’t dare leave without trying the Coffee Panna Cotta (R45) or the Apple and Walnut Baked Donut (R48). It’s obvious that chef Martin’s culinary expertise lies in patisserie (after stints at the Cape Grace and The Showroom, he had a stall at The Neighbourgoods Market selling beautiful mini cakes and macarons).
You might need to visit often this summer, so that you get to sample everything on the menu, including the cocktails! Whiskey Flowers for everyone!
