Luni Art Gallery, Brought to You by Seelan Sundoo

This chef and popular restaurateur has opened an exciting art gallery and café in Salt River.

Seelan Sundoo – owner of Seelan at the V&A and Sundoo in Sea Point – swung open the doors to his Salt River-based art gallery at the beginning of June 2017. The popular restaurateur has loved art from a young age, and would sit for hours drawing and painting, so for him Luni is the realisation of a lifelong passion and dream.

Worth its salt

Salt River and its neighbouring suburbs have experienced somewhat of an art-and-culture boom over the past few years, making Luni – which means “salt of the earth” or “riverbed” in Sanskrit – a welcome addition. Here, Seelan has created a space where aspiring artists can develop their passions, and also showcase their talents.

Salty endeavours

And given Seelan’s foodie inclinations, it’s not surprising that Luni also houses a café, where customers and artists can converse over a light meal or a coffee, or browse some of the many wonderful art books available.

Rotation station

Local artists will have the chance to exhibit their work for a period of four to six weeks before new art works are brought in. This rotation period ensures consistently fresh offerings for art lovers, as well as equal exhibition time for all artists.

Says Seelan: “I want to feature contemporary up-and-coming artists, who have a unique style and personality.” At this stage, the confirmed lineup of curated artists includes: European guest artist, Che Francis Mundama; Hilton Shilder; New York-based guest artist, Ibrahim Baaith; Philip Linch; Thembelihle Ngesi; and Venessa Wiesenmaier-Hopkins, to name but a few.

There will also be an experienced and dedicated in-house framer, who will be on hand to advise clients according to their tastes and likes, making the transition from gallery to personal space or workplace a seamless one.

Although Luni is an exciting art first for the ever-pioneering Sundoo, he says he has plans to open galleries across the Atlantic Seaboard… Artful ambitions, indeed.
