When New York Bagels (NYB) closed its doors in December 2013, after a 20-year stint on Sea Point Main Road (and being in business since 1940), bagel buffs from around the peninsula were at a loss. I have a colleague who would drive from the southern suburbs to the end of Sea Point to get her bagel fix when the craving took hold! That’s how addictive NYB’s bagels are! So, when we heard that it had reopened in Gardens in October, we were elated, and we imagine that its legion of loyal patrons were, too.
New York Bagels Cape Town is a dedicated bagelry, specialising in 13 varieties of traditional boiled and baked New York-style bagels. Also a coffee shop and deli, NYB is the perfect place to put together a picnic basket on your way to the beach, Kirstenbosch or Newlands Forest. Grab a tray and select what you fancy from the selection of tapas, salads and cured meats, which includes kosher pastrami, imported and local charcuterie, and smoked salmon. Ethical shoppers will be pleased to know that the salmon products are sourced from Franschhoek.
There’s also an impressive selection of pickled and cured fish, all made in-house. Those with a sweet tooth will delight in the traditional Jewish (and other) pastries on offer, of which the cheesecake is an absolute must! Don’t leave without popping a bag of preservative- and trans-fat-free bagel chips into your basket – delicious with dips, cheeses, or just a dab of butter!
