If you haven’t yet been to De Warenmarkt on Stellenbosch’s Plein Street, allow us to be paint an ever-so-quick picture. Situated in a cherished 18th-century building, in the cultural heart of this winelands town, this artisanal food market is home to a collective of diverse and passionate purveyors of gourmet street food and drinks. Its latest addition – the Kaapse Vonkel MCC and Oyster Bar – had us bubbling with joy…
The world is your oyster… and so is the MCC
The newest member of De Warenmarkt’s family is the Kaapse Vonkel MCC and Oyster Bar, a collaboration between the market, Simonsig (a wine estate in Stellenbosch), and The Mussel Monger (a local shellfish supplier).
This bubbly bar finds itself in good company, as it joins the likes of Ryan Boon Meats, Deluxe Coffeworks, Juice, Mano’s Bakery, The Restaurant, Olive or Twist, and For the Love of Yummyness.
Quaffers can expect barrel-loads of Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel, as well as Billecart-Salmon French Champagne. And there’ll also be a Strictly Stellenbosch winelist for those who prefer something less bubbly.
The freshest Saldanha Bay oysters (cultivated the traditional way) come courtesy of The Mussel Monger. Served with a sliver of lemon and a dash of Tabasco, the oysters cost R15 (for one) or R90 (for six).
Black mussels, in a deliciously saucy leek, white wine, cream and lemon combo, are also on the menu, served with a mini vetkoek, a truly SA (tr)eat.
There’s no such thing as too much champagne (or too many oysters)!
