In the heart of the Stellenbosch Wine Route lies Vergenoegd, a centuries-old farm known for its flock of Indian Runner ducks. The estate recently welcomed new owners who have maintained its rich history, while ushering in a host of new activities for guests to enjoy during a visit to the farm. Here’s what you can look forward to:
1. Duck Parade
The Vergenoegd Indian Runner ducks are not only a treat to watch, they also happen to be a crucial part of the ecosystem, by helping to keep the snails at bay. Watch as they hobble along to do their day’s work on the farm. And afterwards, go and buy some freshly laid, free-range eggs to take home with you.
2. Artisanal Picnics
Vergenoegd’s picnic baskets are packed with a delicious selection of fresh, farm-made produce. Feast on tasty snacks while sitting on the farm’s serene lawns and drinking in the picturesque views. The ever-changing menu ensures that you can enjoy a different selection every time you visit. The R450 price tag includes a hamper for two, including a bottle of Vergenoegd Runner Duck Wine and a bottle of water. (Kiddies’ baskets cost between R75 and R125, which includes a surprise activity.) Blankets are available, or if you prefer, you can sit at a table.
Cost R450 (basket for two); R75 – R125 (children)
3. The art of blending
Learn and experience the craft of blending the cream of the Cape’s crops at these hands-on blending sessions. Wine-, olive oil-, tea- and coffee-blending workshops take place in the historic Manor House and start from R95 per person. After each session you are free to purchase the personally blended products to take home with you.
Cost From R95
4. Vintage Wine-Tasting
Vergenoegd is one of the few farms on the wine route where visitors have the opportunity to taste vintage red wines. The sessions are informal yet very informative and guests have the option of a cellar tour. And, of course, all wines are available for purchase.
Cost R35 (for five tastings); vintage reds by appointment.
