Who’d have thought suburban Pinelands could ever be home to one of the city’s best seafood joints? We certainly didn’t. That was until we stumbled upon Saltwater Grill – a small bistro with a lot of heart that was opened in November 2015 by hands-on owner, Dylan Paioni.
Perhaps the last place you’d expect to find a high-quality restaurant is at the edge of a shopping centre, but Saltwater Grill in Pineland’s Howard Centre defies all the usual odds. It is proof that with enough passion, quality ingredients, and efficient service, and a very dedicated team of staff, the restaurant odds are ever in one’s favour…
The interiors were recently overhauled to replicate a seaside feeling, with a navy blue-and-white palette, checkered tablecloths, nautical-themed wall hangings, and rustic light hangings to ensure a relaxed setting.

In recent months, Saltwater has earned a steady, unshakeable reputation as a top local restaurant, which has seen some visitors trek all the way from Somerset West just to see if all the praise was deserved (it certainly was, in case you’re wondering how that particular story ends). As such, reservations, particularly for dinner and on weekends, are advised, if not essential
Owner Dylan’s hand-on approach, coupled with his hard-working staff’s dedication, is what has cemented Saltwater Grill’s appeal. The extensive seafood range – everything from snoek chowder, peri-peri kingklip, prawns tempura, salt-and-pepper calamari, grilled hake, smoked salmon and even a signature Spanish seafood stew – ensures all possible ocean favourites are covered, and there are salads and pastas and decadent desserts to top it all.
