Elegantly housed at Asara Wine Estate & Hotel, a mere four kilometres outside of historic Stellenbosch, Sansibar Gin Lounge boasts one of the world’s largest gin selections. Its view-drenched terrace, flaunting magnificent vineyard, garden and mountain views, is the ideal spot for sampling some of the rare gins on offer – over 300 to be precise. And, if it’s chilly, grab a seat by the cosy fireplace, and let the tinkling piano sounds wash over you as you savour a gin cocktail or two.
Aside from a full range of imported gins, Sansibar also carries a comprehensive selection of local gins from a burgeoning SA industry, which is experiencing a boom, thanks to new distilleries and gin spots popping up all over the show.
Here, you will find over 300 imported and local craft gins in what is certainly the largest collection anywhere in Africa. Sansibar’s manager, Joseph Kasongo, is an aficionado (obviously) and, not only will he or one of his able staff members pour you the perfect gin served with a carefully matched tonic water and garnish, he’s more than happy to pause for a quick gin chat.
And if juniper-flavoured tipples aren’t your thing, the bar also serves whiskies, cognacs, cocktails and other drinks.
Upgrade your gin skills
Sansibar also offers fun and informative gin-tasting experiences, perfect for connoisseurs and novices alike. Not only will you expand your gin knowledge, you’ll also get to partake in some in-depth gin discussions.
During the sessions, you’ll get to sample four gins, served in various ways (either neat, with a tonic or in a cocktail – however you prefer), and enjoy a discussion about how each is made, as well as what tastes to anticipate on your palate.
Drink in the stunning setting
All that gin sampling can render a person hungry, which is hardly a problem as Sansibar’s lively bistro (with its own wood-fired oven) has a tasty menu, including flat-bread pizzas, burgers, ribs, baby chicken, salads, salmon, and even some decadent desserts to sweeten things up.
So whether you’re feeling adventurous and looking to try some new gin varieties, or you feel like a gourmet bistro meal in a superb setting, head to Sansibar – the (gin) possibilities are endless…
