Feel like wine-tasting with a difference? Then, you really should book for a wine-tram tour of the winelands – a combination of a bus and tram ride that allows you to, well, hop on and off at the wine farms on your chosen itinerary.
There are two options: the Blue/Green line (which includes mountain-based boutique wine estates) and the Red/Yellow line (which includes valley-based international wineries). Both cost R200, which includes two complimentary tastings along the way (at La Couronne, Holden Manz or La Bourgogne on the Blue/Green line or Maison, Eikehof or Dieu Donne on the Red/Yellow line).
How it works
Once you have booked a departure time for one of the tours, you are free to hop on and hop off at the various wine estates on your chosen route for one-hour intervals each. Once you get off at a wine estate, it will be one hour before the next bus or tram collects you. You are more than welcome to stay for an additional hour(s) at any of the wineries, but this means you need to forfeit another winery.
The tours start from the ticket office, 32 Huguenot Road, Franschhoek Square. You should arrive 10 to 15 minutes prior to your departure time to collect your tickets. Each tour can accommodate 25 guests and you are encouraged to book in advance to secure your seats, but you can also book at the ticket office on the day.
There are 10 different departure times, the first tram leaves at 10am and the last one of the day is at 12.45pm.
Here is the full Blue and Red Line tours programme with information on the tour routes and departure times.
