“Modern interpretations of the classics” is how head chef Wesley Randles describes the food at one of Cape Town’s hottest new restaurants, The Shortmarket Club, which he co-owns with Luke Dale-Roberts and two others. It’s open for breakfast lunch and dinner, but we’re most excited about the braai section, which features grilled crayfish with smoked sweetcorn and wow-factor tomahawk steaks.
The stylish space, designed by co-owner Sandalene Dale-Roberts, has the look and feel of a members-only private club (leather-covered tables, moody lighting and stained-glass accents) without any of the stuffiness (or sleaze). Works by acclaimed local artists Peter Eastman and Mark Rautenbach create visual impact throughout, while sliding doors from Argentina evoke heritage and craftsmanship. As with Luke’s other wildly popular restaurants (The Test Kitchen and The Pot Luck Club), the service, under the leadership of the fourth co-owner Simon Widdison, is efficient and personable.
