A Steam Train to the Winelands

A Steam Train to the Winelands

A novel way to experience Stellenbosch and Spier wine farm.

There’s something decidedly romantic about taking a journey by train… It conjures images of an Agatha Christie murder mystery, or of lovers embracing on a platform after a long separation… Which is why we were rather intrigued to hear about Atlantic Rail’s scenic trips to Stellenbosch.

Train trip to Stellenbosch

The train departs from the Train Lodge Hotel at 9.30am (directions to the departure point will accompany all bookings), and begins its steady journey towards the winelands via Bellville, making its first stop in Stellenbosch at around 11.30am. Here, you will be given three hours to explore its many art galleries, restaurants, cafés and boutiques. The historic university town is famed for its excellent restaurants, so grab a spot of lunch before returning to the train station.

Train trip to Spier

After stopping in Stellenbosch to allow some passengers to disembark, the train continues to Spier, where a variety of exciting activities have been planned. First up is a wine-tasting where visitors get to sample some of the estate’s fine wines (grape juice for under-18s, of course).
The next stop is Eagle Encounters, an animal rehabilitation centre, where you will be introduced to the estate’s beautiful birds of prey.
And then it’s lunch at the farm’s Eight Restaurant, where guests can choose between three meals: roast chicken and mushroom pie, an Angus beef and brie burger, or penne with a tomato and feta sauce (beverages not included). At 3pm, guest will hop back on board the train for a relaxing trip back to the city. Please note: booking is essential.

Oh my.. If I understand correctly, the wine tasting, the lunch, the entry to the bird rehabilitation, the salary of the guide, the running costs of the train…Why would anyone think that there should be a “free trip” GO Jan 12 2017?
I am over 60…by no means wealthy,) I know some millionaire retirees who still make use of their pensioners discount). Pensioners, young families, save up for a special day if its not easily affordable! Give up those few visits to McDonalds, the coffee on the run, the ciggies (if you partake) and whatever you can, if you really want to go on the train. Then enjoy! It is after all a business and needs to make money..

We went on this last year and it was fabulous – we booked it from the UK with no problems at all, and the Altlantic Rail folk were very helpful. A very special memory.

Well I have been to Engeland and there you really pay for these tours because if you do not pay a decent amount of money you get noooo decent trips. Everybody will just hop on and will we be happy with that? It is time we invest in our country.

    Hi there,

do you have any family packages?
    two adults and two kids?
would love to do this with the family – but at R1800 for the four of us – it’s a bit steep.
    please advise.

    Thank you
