Tucked away between De Hoop Nature Reserve and the Breede River mouth, at the end of a 30km dirt road from tiny Malgas (75km from Swellendam), Cape Infanta is one of the southern Cape’s most remote hamlets. There’s not a lot of traffic here – except for whales; it lies on St Sebastian Bay, the “whale nursery” of southern Africa.
This sleepy little seaside town also sits on the quieter side of the river (with Witsand on the opposite side drawing watersports enthusiasts, fishermen and boaters). With nothing but the San Sebastian Private Nature Reserve dividing it from De Hoop, Infanta is immersed in fynbos beauty and is a gem for nature lovers.
Holiday style
Amongst a sprinkling of holiday homes, there’s one that stands out – not only for its modern architectural lines and striking interior, but for its wonderful spaces designed for relaxing and enjoying life at an easy pace.
It’s not overly decorated; just a few well-chosen pictures, mirrors, pot plants, books and a surfboard on the wall, which add to the holiday feel. And if you’re all about the braai – what else are you going to do with that fish you caught? – this house has not one, not two, but three braai areas, to cover all weather conditions.
Joy-filled spaces
Open the stacking doors upstairs, and the kitchen and living area opens up to the deck, the sea air and the views – essentially becoming a super-spacious outdoor lounge and dining area. With huge comfy couches and armchairs, a pool table in the corner and a braai fire burning, it’s the ultimate in indoor-outdoor living.
Downstairs are the four bedrooms – simple and tranquil (and fitted with room-darkening blinds) – opening onto a verandah with sun loungers and a neat garden with lawn, trees and another seating area around a braai.
