If ever you’ve doubted that Paarl has some real pearls hidden in its midst, this magnificent manor will put that misconception to bed, once and for all.
Located around 50 minutes out of Cape Town, Cascade Country Manor Guesthouse & Spa is strongly reminiscent of a Beverly Hills mansion – minus the pretentiousness.
A pearl in Paarl
Situated in the heart of the central Cape Winelands, a mere 10 to 15 minutes away from Paarl, this royal-homestead-turned family-run guesthouse and luxury spa makes for the ideal country escape, romantic getaway or wonderful Western Cape introduction.
Lap of luxury
Leave the nearby rural farmlands and gravel road behind, and allow yourself to be transported to this secluded haven of grandeur and tranquility, set in the midst of ancient olive groves, with the Klein Drakenstein Mountains as a picturesque backdrop.
Outside, the vibrant gardens and eternally tempting pool area are deliciously crisp and well-maintained, despite our drought-stricken times (thanks no doubt to Cascade Country Manor’s mindful water-saving policies).
As you approach the stately main building or enter the delightful courtyard – complete with quintessential gurgling fountain – the initial sense of Hollywood glamour fades, becoming something far nobler. Soak up the manor’s old-world, Mediterranean charm (with a touch of White House pillar flare…) before you enter Cascade’s tantalisingly cool depths and become oblivious to even Paarl’s summer heat.
What lies within
The guesthouse is luxuriously equipped with all the desired amenities of a modern hotel. Its 15 luxurious and individually designed rooms offer chic modernity and old-world touches – including refurbished antique furniture, like the solid African rosewood and delicate chandeliers.
Our double classic room offered a glorious terrace, with lovely mountain views and all manner of necessary amenities (included in all rooms): a TV, well-stocked minibar, complimentary tea and coffee tray, telephone, hairdryer, air-conditioning and an en-suite bathroom, with a wonderful, spacious walk-in shower.
Fun inside and out
Whether you’re after enjoying mountain biking, swimming, walking trails, abseiling or even some olive and olive-oil tasting at this idyllic retreat, Cascade Country Manor has you sorted.
It’s also a stunning event and function venue, for the likes of weddings and conferences, and occasionally hosts its own concerts. During our weekend stay, we were fortunate to be treated to the impressive sounds of Sterling EQ, as the Full Moon Valentine’s Concert got underway.
Cascade Spa – which we were generously invited to enjoy, if time allowed – is the newest addition to this boutique hotel. The intimate wellness centre offers specialist and all-purpose spa treatments. Guests can also enjoy wellness talks, adventure walks and olive oil tastings or advised purchasings of pampering, chemical-free skincare products.
Buffet to remember
After a peaceful night’s undisturbed sleep, wander down to the verandah (which offers amazing views across the garden) for a breakfast buffet, with a choice of fresh fruits, cheese and bread options, muesli and more. You can also order a hot breakfast from the hotel’s wonderful restaurant, which owner Volker Goetze has ensured provides guests with some signature South African dishes. I chose the Eggs Benedict, with smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce and it was truly delicious!
If you have time, the manor’s namesake – the cascading waterfall – is a must-see. Lying some 200 metres away, at the end of the olive-lined avenue, it is indeed a sight for sore eyes.
Because our visit came so soon after the terrible, all-consuming wildfires, which ravished parts of Paarl during January, it was especially heartening to see that many of their bridges, trees and shrubbery had survived the inferno.
Stellar service throughout
From the moment we arrived until our heavy-hearted departure, Cascade Country Manor and its great, efficient and, above all, welcoming staff, made us feel like royalty! We received the highest level of service and wonderful care from everyone involved, most notably generous host Maike Goetze, general manager Barry Geyer and Isabel from the front desk.
Our only complaint was that we had to leave its tender, luxurious embrace…
R1 320 (classic single room) – R 2860 (deluxe room for two) (depending on type of room and number of people sharing)
R300 for children, ages 5 – 12 (limited to certain rooms)

Thank you to Paarl Tourism for their kind assistance and high recommendation of Cascade Country Manor – and, of course, to Cascade Country Manor for hosting us so soon after the devastating Paarl fires.
