Nestled under rustling trees in a private forest, with panoramic views of the towering Groenlandberg Mountains, this secluded forest hideaway in the heart of the Elgin Valley offers a unique camping experience where guests reside in luxury bell tents amid tall pine trees.
The secluded campsite, located on the scenic Groenrug Estate, is a mere hour’s drive from Cape Town, and is the perfect spot for a relaxed weekend away with family and friends, or even a special event, such as a wedding, festival, or work retreat.
Like a scene straight out of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, the scattering of tents on the forest floor lights up at night, evoking the feeling of being lost among the enchanted forest glades. But, don’t take our word for it – you’ll need to experience it yourself to fully understand the magic!
A mere 12 bell fully furnished tents are permanently pitched, offering guests a comfortable space to rest their heads.
As owners Richard and Magriet Cherry say: “Imagine sleeping on a comfortable and luxurious bed, cocooned in quality linen, with only the sound of the wind in the trees and the soft rustle of your canvas tent and its moorings, and you begin to get the idea…” Bliss!
And, if you’re in the market for a special occasion, you can request that (up to) 40 additional tents be pitched in the designated 35-hectare area.
There’s also a fully equipped kitchen available on site, an outdoor lapa with braai facilities, an open-air theatre, and a communal lounge boasting a large dining table and fireplace.
Activities all around
If you’re here for a break, you’ll probably want to lie in, read, or maybe go for a lazy morning stroll. But, if you’re in the mood to get out and about, there’s plenty to see, do and eat.
The adventure-inclined will relish in the Cape Canopy Tour, Klein Paradys Equestrian Centre and Nature Discovery Tours, while wine-lovers will enjoy exploring the estates of the Elgin Wine Valley. The Overberg and Whale Route make for a wonderful day trip, while various farm stalls and restaurants, including Gabriëlskloof Restaurant, Peregrine Farm Stall and The Hickory Shack, are a short drive away.
Whether you’re after an adventurous escape, or a feet-up-and-chill break, this unique experience ticks all the boxes.
Please note: Each tent sleeps two adults; extra beds can be added for R250 per bed per night.
