Flamingo Cottage: A Mesmerising Waterside Stay in Churchhaven

Flamingo Cottage

Perfection on the West Coast.

The fishing hamlet of Churchhaven, within the West Coast National Park on the western shores of Langebaan Lagoon, is remote and unspoilt. Think gravel roads, no street lights, no shops and very limited accommodation, which is why scoring a booking here is like finding treasure for those seeking a tranquil escape.

A sense of place

Flamingo Cottage View

Surrounded by the gently muted fynbos and marshland flora of this region, alongside a body of water that glistens like a jewel – emerald, sapphire, aquamarine, rose quartz depending on the time of day – Flamingo Cottage is that special find.

Flamingo Cottage Outside

Behind the weathered antique front door lies a light-filled home filled with wonderful spaces, contemporary decor and design, and skylights and picture windows to let the landscape in. An artwork of swallows flying across the living-room wall perfectly evokes the sense of freedom and release you’ll feel here, of being swept up in the beauty of this remarkable setting.

Double the joy

Flamingo Cottage Patio

Two buildings make up this spacious cottage, joined together by a sun-dappled patio – the spot you’re likely to spend most of your time, and not just for the dazzling view. With its comfy seating, hammock and dining table, plus two fires _ one for braaiing (or to keep one warm while stargazing) and one for baking pizzas –  you can settle in for hours of leisurely amusement.

Flamingo Cottage Lounge

Inside, the set-up is repeated, with an open-plan lounge and dining area beside a fireplace (for when the weather turns), plus a fabulous kitchen with counter stools – the sociable engine room that fuels the holiday fun and feasting. There’s also a secret stone-walled courtyard where you can read quietly beside the bonsais and an olive tree.

The landscape, white-sand shoreline and placid waters of the lagoon are sure to lure you out sometime to explore, but the real pleasure lies in being able to return to this cottage.
