Situated in the quaint Karoo town of Montagu, this three-hectare working olive and wine farm sits in the heart of a tranquil valley. Providing the best of both worlds, this serene destination is a mere stroll from the shops and charming cafés of the town centre, and is also surrounded by endless nature, tucked away inside the towering Langeberg Mountains.
The property offers two entirely unique (yet equally special) accommodation units; either an exclusive stay in the farm’s original Cape Dutch Klein Nektar Manor, or a secluded self-catering escape in Klein Nektar’s Farm Cottage on the far edge of the expansive property.
The charming self-catering Klein Nektar Farm Cottage is the ultimate spot for unhindered, low-key relaxation. Situated at the tip of a quiet olive-tree-lined road, the cottage is completely off the grid, which means there’s no electricity or wi-fi, but solar lamps, a gas-water heater, fridge, freezer, stove and oven ensure a relaxed and comfortable stay.
Accommodating up to four guests in two queen bedrooms with a shared bathroom, the cottage also boasts a charming open-plan living area that includes a fully equipped kitchen, lounge with a fireplace, and a dining area all nestled under an authentic reed ceiling. The private outdoor garden is ideal for braais, while the wrap-around terrace is the perfect spot for chilled summer lounging, offering a number of seating areas and views of the surrounding olive groves and paddocks. Not to mention a tempting daybed, with its promise of a lazy afternoon nap or read.
While the farm offers relaxing strolls through olive groves and orchards, if you’re looking for a more strenuous workout, there are walking, hiking and mountain-biking trails aplenty in the surrounding countryside. Culture vultures will enjoy the close proximity to Montagu’s cultural centre, where wonderful art galleries, cafés, shops, museums and restaurants await. And wine aficionados will relish being so close to the famous Route 62. Bird-watchers and fans of fishing will have loads to keep them busy, too.
But, actually, if you’d prefer to curl up with a good book, and catch up on some reading, that’s perfectly in order because, no matter how you choose to relax, after a stay at Klein Nektar, you’ll leave feeling recharged.
