The Kite House: A Self-Catering Sanctuary in McGregor

The Kite House: A Self-Catering Sanctuary in McGregor

A wonderful way to experience the tranquillity of McGregor.

Situated in the charming town of McGregor, The Kite House is a private slice of country life, hidden in the upper village, away from the tourist-trodden guesthouses dotted in the centre of town.

Yours, and yours alone, this self-catering home offers magnificent views of the rolling hills, as well as picturesque gardens and a sparkling swimming pool, which comes in rather handy during the scorching summer when temperatures in the village soar. The ideal sanctuary for a peaceful city escape…

The rooms

Mcgregor Accommodation

With a main house that sleeps four, and an en-suite outside room that accommodates two (with basic amenities including a kettle, small bar fridge and toaster), The Kite House has capacity for the whole family (including the furry members!). All rooms are light and minimally decorated – with a unique kite hanging on the wall of each one, giving the various rooms their own personality.

Lie of the land

The kitchen is cleverly divided into two sections by a wall, with a hidden scullery, and an open-plan workspace flowing into the lounge and outdoor patio. Meal preparation is a festive affair, with a counter and barstools inviting friends to perch close by. Then, when eating’s done, and dishes have been cleared away (there’s no dishwasher, incidentally), spend the afternoon lounging under the eaves on the stoep, taking in unobstructed mountain and garden views.

Fido and friends

You’re in farm country here, so it’s not surprising that this is an animal-friendly abode. Bring the pooches, or any other pet-sized family members, and let them run around to their heart’s content. There’s also complimentary wi-fi, a fully installed DStv decoder with a small DSTV package, and a fireplace for hot chocolate-and-red-wine-fuelled winter nights, board games at the ready…

Nearby attractions

Temenos Gardens

If you’re there over the weekend, head to the Saturday-morning market for fresh, homemade produce and delicious warm breakfast goodies – at wonderful country prices! Art lovers should take a stroll to the galleries along the town’s art route, and wine enthusiasts can visit an extensive selection of wineries in and around the town for superb wine-tasting and views to match.

There are also a number of hiking, and more leisurely walking trails, as well as cycle routes, with maps for all of these at the tourist office. Or, choose to simply relax and unwind with a massage at one of the local wellness spots, or with a book in the peaceful Temenos gardens.

Should you tire of home cooking, the town is teeming with a variety of places to grab a bite to eat and drink. We recommend Tebaldi’s at Temenos, Green Gables Country Inn Dining Room, Lady Grey Restaurant at Lord’s Guest Lodge, Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary Restaurant, 51 Voortrekker and Pizza Pazza.

Good to know Part of a larger, quieter development that values their peace and tranquillity, no large gatherings or parties are allowed.
