Anthonij Rupert Wyne: A Destination Wine Farm in Franschhoek

A scenic slice of the Franschhoek Valley is yours to explore on a visit to Anthonij Rupert Wyne, a wonderfully scenic Winelands destination that demands at least half a day. Coupled with the adjoining L’Ormarins estate, it spans vineyards, gardens and tree-lined avenues, two separate tasting rooms (each presenting different wine ranges), an antipasti bar, and is also home to the Franschhoek Motor Museum.

The attractions are linked by an old-school tram ride, so there’s no need to drive yourself from one to the next (unless you want to).  Here are five reasons to visit. (Please note Visits to the estate are by appointment only.)

Wine-tasting at Rupert Wines

Housed in the original Cape Dutch manor house, the Anthonij Rupert Wyne Tasting Room, takes you back in time, with wood-beamed ceilings, yellowwood floors and antique furnishings. Taste the flagship range of Anthonij Rupert red wines, L’Ormarins cap classiques, and Cape of Good Hope terroir-specific wines from old vines and unique sites.

Near the entrance of the estate is the Terra del Capo Tasting Room, housed in a contemporary stone cellar. Tastings here feature the Italian-style Terra del Capo range (the late Anthonij Rupert had a passion for cultivating the finest Italian varietals in Cape soil). Or sip the everyday-drinking Protea selection of classic whites and reds.

Italian antipasti

Lunch at the Terra del Capo Antipasti bar marries local flavours and ingredients with Italian flair. Think smoked-snoek samosas, luscious burrata with roasted cauliflower, ricotta gnocchi, cured kudu loin, and aromatic truffle-infused tagliatelle (prepared with their own estate-grown truffles).

Franschhoek Motor Museum

A must for petrol-heads and vintage-car lovers, the museum displays around 80 cars and motorbikes from the 220-vehicle collection that covers more than 100 years of motoring history. From a 1903 Ford Model A and a 1915 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, to a 1933 Mercedes-Benz and contemporary icons such as the Dodge Viper GT2 or the Alfa Romeo SZ, auto enthusiasts are sure to find something that’ll get their motors revving.

Mini high tea at Anthonij Rupert

A snapshot taste of the good life, the mini high tea is served in the glorious manor house tasting room, with beautiful views from the verandah. A perfect wine-pairing treat when you don’t have time to linger for the full package but want to spoil yourself.

Wine-and-cheese pairing at Anthonij Rupert

This experience in the Terra del Capo tasting room is a cheese-lover’s fantasy, pairing four of the estate’s Italian varietals with a selection of five fabulous Italian-style artisanal cheeses. Savour smoked mozzarella, aged Fontina and gorgonzola among others, with an educational and fun presentation sharing the origins and cheese-making processes of each.
