Close your eyes and be transported to a trattoria in a remote Italian village. Isola – Italian for “island” – is aptly named, as owners Alberto and Matteo Crovetto have created a slice of Italy in the heart of Cape Town’s CBD. From the red, white and green lettering on the outside to the cosy interior, festive courtyard and the animated Italian chefs in the kitchen, it doesn’t get more Italian than this (well, not in Cape Town).
Alberto and the two Genovese chefs make everything on site, including the satisfyingly thick pizza bases, artichoke ravioli, gnocchi with pesto, bruschetta with wine-sautéed onions, roasted tomatoes and smoked mushrooms, and mini focaccias topped with pesto and brie.
The winelist has some choice local varietals from the likes of Steenberg, Kleine Zalze and La Motte, but do yourself a favour and order an Aperol Spritz – a liqueur of bitter oranges and spices with soda water. “It’s fresh, easy to drink and perfect for summer”, says Alberto. Round off your evening with a shot of homemade limoncello or mandarinetto. Salute!
Opening hours: Monday – Saturday, 12pm – 11pm.
