When Leigh Trout and Kevin Mink opened their charming avian-inspired café on Bree Street in 2011, there was but a handful of places to eat on what’s since become one of the Mother City’s main foodie strips! The serene space was a favourite not just among those seeking a peaceful and civilised reprieve from the bustle outside; oftentimes you’d spot burly rugby-playing types seated at a table, tucking into a generous portion of homemade chicken pie.
So, we had a wistful moment when we were notified last week that after five happy years of quality service and fresh, tasty meals, Birds has closed its doors for good.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. The quaint, nature-inspired café will be replaced with something new, which for the moment is still under wraps. What we can confirm is that the beautiful, sunny Cape Dutch building will once again have new life breathed into it.
