The Best Boat Trips in Cape Town

Rock the boat with these unique tours, fun trips and breathtaking cruises

There’s something wonderfully immersive and exhilarating about ocean travel – be it on a spacious luxury liner, a tugboat for two, or a bustling public ferry. The unobstructed scenery, the wind in your hair and sea spray on your face, the time away from real life, and the repetitive rocking – these all make sea rides decidedly appealing.

Living in Cape Town, and being surrounded by the sparkling ocean, means that there are boat rides aplenty right on our doorstep. They vary widely – in terms of the vessels and trips – so let your requirements and budget guide you.

This trip focuses on the Bos 400, an old crane barge that ran aground during the Cape storm of 1994. You’ll probably recognise it from diving-junkie videos or panoramic YouTube shots, but this tour from Drumbeat Charters will get you up close and personal for a real-life look at the sunken star.

Chapman’s Peak Cruise

Chapman’s Peak Drive is one of the most breathtaking routes along the coast, but is often closed for maintenance work due to rock falls. Since you can’t be guaranteed to hop in your car and take a drive, why not opt for a cruise instead? Drumbeat Charters offers a trip to see the seals, with a return route along the majestic cliffs and hidden caves of Chapman’s Peak. Now you can enjoy one of the most scenic routes in the city, from the sea.
Route Leaves from Hout Bay Harbour, and heads to Seal Island, sailing back along the Chapman’s Peak coastline.

Get close enough to see (and smell) the Cape Fur Seal in its natural habitat on Seal Island, also home to many different species of birds. Be sure to book this cruise between January and March, which is moulting season, so you’ll see the most seals. Known as the performers of the sea these, guys are bound to put on a show, so remember to bring your smartphones and cameras.

          Hi Nobuhl

Thanks for your message. The Sunset cruise on an old-school sailboat is reasonably priced; the Pirate-Ship Cruise is great for families with kids, alternatively, the Seal Colony Cruise is one of the more affordable boat trips.

Hi. My family and I will be visiting Cape Town in January. I am looking for a nice relaxing cruise for 3 of us including our 4 year old son. The duration of the cruise should not be longer than 2 hours cause it will be his first time and I am not sure how he will feel. Please suggest something that either includes breakfast or lunch – no evening cruises.
