When De Oudebank Bakkerij opened in 2010 as an artisanal bakery, it was our go-to place for exquisite croissants and exceptional coffee. Then it changed names – to Schoon De Companje – transforming itself into a popular restaurant-deli, where locals and visitors converged for excellent breakfasts, delicious baked goods, tasty ice creams, and an assortment of deli treats.
However, the couple who owned it (Fritz and Chanelle Schoon) handed over the mantle to long-standing associate, Boschendal Farm Estate, in March 2017 to embark on new ventures – including the arrival of the family’s newest addition. This means that the De Oude Bank building became part of the Boschendal fold as of 1 March 2017.
Schoon’s offerings and services have always been decidedly “pure” (as the Schoon name implies), with baker Fritz and wife Chanelle (who brought the delicious, handmade FannyChanel ice-cream to the shop) dedicated and hands-on in their approach.
Which is why it felt natural for Boschendal – Schoon’s go-to fresh veggie supplier – to take over the space, and create a restaurant that echoes Schoon’s passion and simplicity.
Boschendal’s CEO Rob Lundie has been quick in assuring the public that it won’t be dabbling with the successful formula. Thus, patrons can continue to enjoy the same foods and flavours when visiting De Oudebank, Stellenbosch.

In September 2017, the Schoons announced the opening of their brand-new bakery-cum-coffeeshop on Bright Street in Somerset West. Guess where we’ll be heading for our daily bread?
