It’s the best of both worlds: food so delicious it makes you go “Ahhhh”, and so healthy your body starts singing as you swallow.
You’ll find Bowls on Bree up a long staircase – two long staircases, in fact – inside the gallery space of Upstairs on Bree. It’s an inauspicious entrance, traipsing up the stairs; but the view of the city through the wall of windows – combined with the beautiful leather-and-wood bar (designed by local architects Wildetecture) and windowsills full of succulents – is worth the climb. And that’s before you’ve had a bite to eat.
The choices are simple: drinks are still, sparkling or coconut water; food is a Buddha, Paleo or Poké Bowl. But don’t be fooled by the seemingly spare options – you won’t believe how much goodness gets packed into one white bowl.
There are three steps to deciding on your lunch: first, you choose a bowl – there are six Poké Bowls (3 salmon, 3 tuna); three vegan Buddha Bowls; and three chicken Paleo Bowls. Then you chose your base – sushi rice, ancient grains, cauliflower rice, leaves. And then you choose your dressing – everything from simple soy and sesame (yes, please) to a superb tahini and dijon, cilantro and ginger, sriracha vinaigrette, and a wasabi vinaigrette for the particularly brave. There are add-ons, too, if you need – avo (don’t we all need more avo in our lives?), extra protein, chilli.
Erik Schärberg is the man behind the bowls – quite literally. He’s the owner, he came up with the concept (“Grab life by the Bowls”), and he stands behind that fabulous bar whipping up the food.
You can tell, from the very first bite, that there is life in abundance in these bowls. I chose the Silly Salmon, with seared Norwegian salmon, BoB’s pineapple raw slaw, shredded daikon, roasted asparagus, the most amazing organic bean sprouts (a phrase I never thought I’d utter), micro herbs, pickled red onion and a sprinkling of toasted almonds and coconut flakes. It’s a rainbow of colour and taste in one bowl. And I kid you not, I felt fantastic all afternoon.
