The 50 Best Camping Sites in the Cape

Camping Sites Ebb & Flow Rest Camp, Vicky G

Recharge in the serenity of natural beauty spots.

Sometimes, a complete break from the daily grind is the only way to reboot, and pitching a tent is the best way to find adventure and connection to what matters most. Fortunately, in Cape Town, we are blessed with an array of out-of-the-way places that are – ironically – close enough to be able to hop in the car and get away from it all.

We’ve found sites for every kind of camper – on farms, beside rivers, on mountain tops, in forests; from the remote and rustic to ones that come with anything from a private plunge pool or hot tub to a golf green – and the kitchen sink, gas stove and freezer. For those who prefer more luxury on their nature breaks, see our Best Glamping Getaways in the Western Cape.

Where would you like to go camping?

The Overberg
Cederberg
Porterville, Tulbagh & Surrounds
The Winelands
Breede River Valley
The Karoo
The Garden Route

Important note: If you’ll be hiking, be prepared – even if it seems like an easy trail, an injury, severe weather or wrong turn could become life-threatening. Take water, snacks and warm clothing. Never hike alone, and pace it according to the slowest person in the group. Reserves may close their trails due to flooding or fire damage, so check before heading out; also always check the weather report. Make sure you have emergency numbers for the area in your phone.
