A shared passion for delicious food, community upliftment and protection of the environment has made IYO Burgers one of the most exciting food concepts in Cape Town. What started as a mobile food van in late 2013 has developed into a new burger bar in the trendiest part of town, 103 Bree Street.
Jonah Lewis and Jean Marc Lenferna have a reputation for making some of the best burgers in town with the emphasis on sustainability, the freshest possible ingredients, ethically sourced from local farmers, and inspired preparation.
The Inside Out Burger
The range is relatively small: nine burgers including ostrich and chicken burgers and two vegetarian options made from delicious combos of goats cheese/beetroot/bean and curried lentils/aubergine/sweet potato. The beef is 100% locally sourced (as are all the other ingredients) and grass-fed, and the patties are flavoured and spiced and extravagantly teamed with gourmet ingredients, such as artisan cheeses, pickled red onion and organic bacon. The Whiskey Braai-BQ burger, for example, is a smoked cheddar-stuffed beef patty topped with bacon, avocado, wild rocket and the now-famous IYO whiskey braai-BQ sauce.
While the burger patties are undoubtedly the stars of the show, the accompanying sides are also worth celebrating. The buttery, soft and not-too-heavy burger buns are specially made by the head baker at the Cape Quarter Spar and the organic curly fries are made with Van Der Plank potatoes sourced from farms in and around Cape Town and seasoned with homemade salts flavoured with truffle, rosemary and thyme.
Also on the menu are some delectable alternatives: veggie croquettes (sweet potato and spinach with vegan-cashew mayo), pulled pork pancakes and an Asian-style root and garden veggie salad (spiralised to make the veggies more like noodles) served with peanut satay sauce. The smoothie shakes are also a speciality – for example, the Vanilla Bean with organic vanilla, maca, banana, yoghurt, cashews and cinnamon, and the Power Choc containing superfood protein mix, raw cacao, cacao nibs, banana, dates, yoghurt and walnuts.
The Burger Bar
In line with IYO’s focus on sustainability, the shopfitting was done with eco-friendly materials – for example, the wood is spruce board approved by the Forest Stewardship Council, which means that for every tree that is cut down, another one is planted. All the glass is recyclable and till slips are sent electronically via email to save paper.
The mobile burger van can still be found at OZCF City Farm Market on Saturdays and at festivals around the city. IYO also caters for private functions.
