Reached by a long winding road set against the eastern slope of Table Mountain, the Cellars-Hohenort Hotel is home to one of Cape Town’s timeless culinary gems. As its name implies, Greenhouse is enclosed in a glass box that maximises its magnificent setting, with see-through panels overhead creating the illusion of being outside.
At the helm is brilliant executive chef Peter Tempelhoff, who has been at Greenhouse for more than 10 years and, along with head chef Ashley Moss and their devoted team, consistently elevates the benchmark of modern South African cuisine.
Only the finest ingredients are used in the creation of Peter and Ashley’s clever, seasonally driven dishes, many of which contain items that have been foraged for or plucked from the estate’s organic garden. Think steamed blue prawn with gamefish, kelp, seaweeds and sesame; ostrich tartare with salt-baked celeriac, truffled quails egg, kombu-pickled vegetable and cepe mushroom; chokka noodles, with salsify (a root veg), sour fig and ink yuzu sauce; braai bokkie with coffee carrots, lacquered onion, mushroom and sweetbreads; and white-chocolate pap, with raspberry, pistachio, tarragon and guava; and chocolate tapas.
