Few things are more evocative than a steam-train ride through the countryside… Splendour, nostalgia and old-world glamour… The 3.5-hour train ride to Elgin Railway Market departs from the Foreshore in Cape Town and travels up and over Sir Lowry’s Pass (one of the steepest rail lines in South Africa). Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of mountains, the ocean, fynbos-covered hills, farmlands and orchards along the way.
All aboard
The Family Compartments are the largest private option on the train, with two big windows for panoramic views and a table to enjoy refreshments en route. Snacks and drinks (including wine, beer and spirits) are sold onboard. The compartment seats six people comfortably, so you can enjoy this memorable journey with your favourite people. Whether a multi-generational family trip or a group of friends, or just you and a plus-one on a special day out, everyone will be keen on this outing.
Once the train pulls into the Elgin station (just before lunchtime), you’ll disembark amid locomotive whistles and puffs of steam, and enjoy a couple of hours at the steampunk-themed Elgin Railway Market, right at the station. There’s a dazzling selection of food stalls, drinks, live music and more to keep you entertained. And then it’s back on board for the ride home, perhaps gently rocked into a satisfied snooze, as the sun sinks in the sky.

We have been in the Elgin Steam Train with our grandsons and what an experience it turned out be.
On the way they were intrigued about everything that was going on. On the way back they entertained themselves by playing hide and seek with the other children they had met on the way.
