As its name suggests, Montana Vista Cabin has vast, never-ending views over the ancient, time-weathered landscape and mountains of the southern Karoo. With its wooden deck (complete with wood-burning hot tub and braai area), this cabin hidden between two ridges is the perfect spot to unplug and restore your soul.
Well-travelled photographer and writer Jonathan Deal fell in love with this slice of the Karoo more than 20 years ago, establishing Gecko Rock as an eco-escape. It’s just 2.5 hours from Cape Town, near Touws River – but feels like another time and place. It’s a wild terrain, home to numerous animals big and small, and distinctive and curious Karoo plantlife; just the place to reconnect with nature while hiking, rock-climbing, mountain-biking and stargazing.
If you’d prefer, chill, soak up the setting (like a sun-lounging gecko), daydream and stargaze from the comfort of your own private hot tub. And if it’s chilly out, the cast-iron fireplace will ensure cosy evenings (board games supplied).

The total prize is valued at R7 400 and includes a two-night self-catering stay for up to four people, and a signed copy of Jonathan Deal’s coffee-table book Timeless Karoo.
