If you’ve ever had the extraordinarily good fortune to experience the Orange River Gorge, you’ll agree it’s one of those rare, cherished places.
Switching off from the chaos of daily life and becoming fully immersed in the beauty of Mother Nature is undeniably what you come here for, not to mention pulse-raising paddles through rapids, moonlit campfire dinners, and sleeping under a starlit sky.
One such way to explore the 35km river gorge is on a five-day trip with Gravity Adventures. Starting near Pofadder in the Northern Cape, this section of the river is arguably the best for its diverse conditions, which vary from flat water with flowing channels to small rapids and a few “big boys” to get the adrenaline flowing.
The pristine wilderness is unmatched, with highlights being the Orange Gorge and the awe-inspiring Richie Falls – the second highest waterfall on the river, after Augrabies!
The trip starts with a night’s stay at Red Rock River Base Camp, where guests can enjoy a drink at the bar, a tasty meal and the promise of a good night’s sleep. The following morning, you will be introduced to your guides who will take you through the do’s and don’ts of paddling. And then it’s time to embark on your four-day journey down the river – resting your head at a different campsite each night.
On the first day, you’ll be faced with flowing channels and flat water, ending with a night at Scorpion camp. Day two brings larger rapids and an evening walk to view the Richie Falls. Day three is full of excitement, with a challenging portage around the falls, carrying and lowering the boats above the 42 Man Hole, Big Bunny and Dolly Parton rapids. The final day is a mellow one, with a gentle paddle through mountains, a relaxing riverside lunch and a trip back to base camp to enjoy a final meal around the campfire.
All meals, paddling equipment and cooking supplies are included – you simply need to bring your drinks of choice, clothes, sunscreen, tent, a sleeping bag and, of course, a sense of adventure.

The total prize is valued at R22 200 (R5 550 per person), and includes a five-night trip for four down the Orange River Gorge. The winner will be permitted to join one of the scheduled trips (dates will be provided upon contact) or may choose their own dates (subject to a minimum group size). Transport to and from the Orange River is not included in the prize.
