Characterised by stunning mountain views, flourishing vineyards and a charming village centre, the historical town of Montagu in the Little Karoo is an ideal spot for those seeking a tranquil break from the city.
One such place to experience it is Jonkmanshof – a one-of-a-kind guesthouse doused in style and a rich history dating back to 1854. Comprising two manor houses (namely 20 and 30 Bath Street), the guesthouse has had many iterations during its almost-200-year life. Its current incarnation is two spectacularly beautiful country homes in a quiet side street just off the main road, beckoning discerning travellers to pass through its doors.
Inside, the owners have given the homes a fresh lease on life, while preserving key features, such as original wooden floorboards and high ceilings, and adding some warm country-style touches, such as exposed river-reed ceilings and a selection of the finest antiques and furniture.

outside terrace with recliners and a dining table, and – for those seeking a work-from-paradise situation – complimentary wifi.
Whether you choose to spend your days in the garden, lounging by the pool in summer, curling up with a book in front of the fire when it’s chilly, hiking in the mountains, rock-climbing, playing a round of golf, taking a drive in a classic car, or enjoying a coffee from a local café, you’ll find more than enough to keep you occupied – and utterly relaxed – at this Karoo idyll.
