Though it’s just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town, this 2 500-hectare game reserve near Bonnievale feels like it’s a million miles away. With nothing but an acacia-shaded valley extending to the Riviersonderend Mountains in the distance; and the sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves to keep you company, Melozhori is the ultimate reprieve.
Founded in 2008, this private game reserve (once part of the historic wagon route) lies in the majestic Cape Fold Mountains in the Overberg. Following considerate rehabilitation efforts, the reserve is host to plains of Karoo succulents, mountainous fynbos and Renosterveld that provide the perfect grazing grounds for a slew of wildlife, including rare yet beautiful sable antelope, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, eland, oryx and bontebok, to name a few. The Cape leopard has also been spotted here on rare occasion!
There is a lodge and a cottage on the property, but it’s the two brand-new pods (Valley Pod and Waterfall Pod) that are currently making waves. Perched on an untouched area of the reserve that overlooks the game-dotted plains beyond, the pods are perfectly positioned to allow guests to game spot from the comfort of a hammock or hot tub while letting the serenity and solitude of the surrounds do their thing.
Each pod features an en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower, an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area with an indoor fireplace, and an outdoor deck with a braai, seating, wood-fired hot tub, pizza oven and even a 14-metre hammock – the ultimate place to game watch.
Guests are welcomed by hands-on staff, who are only a Whatsapp away should you require anything. There’s also fast-speed wifi, so those wanting to work remotely can do so with ease.
