Hermanus is one of those destinations that has loads to offer no matter what time of year you visit. Scenic cliff-path walks (with the possibility of whale-spotting in winter), buzzy restaurants, quaint boutiques, a burgeoning art scene and the nearby Hemel-en-Aarde wine route. Staying at The Marine adds a layer of luxury to your getaway, its enviable cliff-hugging location and outstanding service ticking all the boxes.
Owned by the late hotelier Liz McGrath, The Marine is one of three hotels in the eponymous collection and, like its sister properties, is synonymous with culinary excellence, low-key sophistication and warm, professional service.
With a heated saltwater pool, an effortlessly chic lounge and bar where locals gather for sundowners and sea views, the elegant Pavilion restaurant, and a tranquil spa, you could happily just cocoon here during your stay. Although the fynbos-lined cliff path that runs past the hotel is sure to tempt you out to explore at least part of the 11-kilometre stretch that snakes its way along the Walker Bay coastline.
Seaside sojourn
The Marine’s 40 rooms range from spacious suites with private terraces and ocean views to the understated luxury of the 20 very comfortable standard double rooms that look onto the sheltered courtyard, several with private balconies. Each morning, breakfast is served in the Pavilion restaurant, its black and white décor reminiscent of the 1920s, and on fine days you can eat alfresco, either by the pool or in the outside pavilion overlooking Walker Bay. A lavish spread of fruit, cereals, freshly baked pastries, cold meats and smoked Franschhoek trout is followed by hot breakfast dishes from the à la carte menu.
Spa serenity
Add some warmth and pampering to your winter break at the on-site Carchele Beauty Spa, which offers a wide range of relaxing massages and beauty treatments, including Black Pearl and Decléor facials, waxing, hand and foot therapy, body treatments, and couples massages, among others. There’s also a steam room and DermaLife capsule, with various programmes designed to detoxify, relax and rejuvenate.
Old-world charm
