Tjing Tjing House on Longmarket Street is one of those impossible-to-ignore places, not least for its fantastic decor, but also because it houses four unique and vastly different experiences, each of which offers curious diners a delicious taste of Japan.
On the first floor, you’ll find the beautifully understated Tjing Tjing Momiji restaurant, offering diners a sophisticated yet laidback experience every Friday and Saturday (and by request for groups or private events on other nights).
Executive chef Adri Morel, who has been with Tjing Tjing since 2015 (and is also the brainchild behind Mochi Mochi, Tjing Tjing’s sister wagashi shop), is known for her endless creativity. Along with head chef Nicola Aucamp, Adri has devised an intriguing and exquisitely plated set menu comprising multiple delectable dishes.
For starters, you’ll experience the flavour delights of ingredients such as pickled mussels with wakame and milkbread, aged rump yukke (tartare), smoked sashimi with fermented daikon and sesame tuna nigiri.
The menu leads onto Kinoko dobin-mushi, a traditional Japanese dish in which an aromatic broth and seasonal ingredients are heated and served from a dobin (small teapot).
To do justice mottainai, a Japanese expression expressing regret concerning waste, Momiji has uses the under-utilised Wagyu tongue in a Wagyu and yaki imo dish. Yaki imo is a fire-roasted sweet potato, a typical autumnal street food, served from little trucks on the side of the road in Japan, but Momiji’s version is served with smoked and pickled sweet potato, dashi milk-bread crumbs and black sesame seeds.
Dessert includes preserved apricot ohagi (a rice-based dessert) with toasted-rice ice cream and popped sorghum. And expect an after-dessert treat of mochi with kitto katsu (Kit-Kat).
