***Winner announced! Congratulations to Martin Kallis who won this fabulous prize.
A tiny town on the fringe of the Karoo, Matjiesfontein is perhaps most famous for its one-and-only hotel, the exquisite colonial-era Lord Milner Hotel, built in 1899. Declared a national heritage site in 1975, the town’s other attractions include a train station that’s notably a stopover for the Blue Train and Rovos Rail, transport museum, old-school post office and fire station, complete with a vintage fire engine, and an iconic pub (whose walls no doubt contain many stories).
Like stepping into a timewarp, The Lord Milner feels like a scene straight out of The Grand Budapest Hotel. The staff’s fantastically eccentric Victorian-era outfits (think bonnets and bellhop hats), coupled with vintage furniture and a general feeling of faded grandeur, enhance its otherworldly charm.
It’s here where you’ll be spending the night, following a jam-packed day of adventures on your way to this heritage-drenched Karoo town.
The Wine Flies Karoo Desert Tour kicks off with a historical mini walking tour around Cape Town, followed by coffee (or drinks) at an iconic local pub. Then it’s all aboard your private tour bus, complete with a personal guide, before setting off towards Rawsonville for a wine-tasting, cupcake pairing and lunch at the quaint Kirabo wine farm.
Once lunch is done, you’ll set off towards Matjiesfontein through the scenic plains of the Klein Karoo. Upon arrival, you’ll be treated to a very quirky bus tour, where you’ll gain firsthand insight into the unusual anecdotes of the town’s unique history.
It’s then on to refreshments at the local pub, accompanied by live music, before enjoying a starlit Karoo-lamb braai for dinner, and a spooky nighttime tour of the haunted museum.
Wake up to a hearty hotel breakfast, before embarking on a graveyard visit and beginning your exciting adventure back home through the deserted Koo valley – where you’ll be shown the art of biltong making and enjoy a lunch at Oupa Batt se Winkel (the oldest farm stall in South Africa!).
Make room in your suitcase for a pitstop at Montagu Dried Fruit & Nuts HQ, and snack on your newly gathered padkos as you make your way lazily back towards Cape Town, passing historical monuments and sweeping vistas as you go.
