The vibrant display of diverse sea life that inhabits the I&J Ocean Exhibit at the Two Oceans Aquarium is enough to light up any darkened room. And when you add live music, it becomes a mesmerising coalescence of visual and auditory stimulation.
Following on from last year’s incredibly successful event, Two Oceans Aquarium – in collaboration with entertainment website Texx and the City – is hosting the next iteration of its After Dark series, where a host of talented local musicians entertains the crowd while stingrays and sea turtles float in a massive tank behind them.
Last Wednesdays at Two Oceans Aquarium
Eight talented local bands will be performing on the final Wednesday of May, June, July and August – with two bands hitting the stage each night. Behind them, a giant viewing window peers into the 1.6-million-litre seawater tank inside the Aquarium’s revolutionary I&J Ocean Exhibit. They will be performing on stripped-down acoustics sets, so as to ensure the noise as no effect on the aquatic inhabitants.
The stellar lineup includes Shadowclub (2012 SAMA winners for best rock album with Guns and Money); Capetonian post-punk group Dangerfield; soul-blues-rock solo artist Manny Walters; and Hout Bay-based “Zulu-funk” outfit The Steezies. They are supported by some of Cape Town’s most interesting up and comers, including Manu Grace, Twin Weaver, Luh’ra and Androgenius.
Doors open at 7pm with the first act on stage at 8pm, and the second act at 9pm. Included in the cost of admission is a welcome buchu-infused G&T, or a pick-me-up pale ale, brought to you by the nautical-themed microbrewery, Drifter Brewing Company.
For those feeling peckish, you have the option of ordering a meat or vegetarian dish before the show.
Good to know Purchasing a ticket to the event also grants you access to a special Two Oceans Aquarium membership offer (a year’s unlimited access to the Aquarium for just R245, as opposed to the standard R430).
