If you’ve been to Avondale Estate, you’ll know all about their newish, yet already famed, restaurant Faber, and their now flourishing vine-laden verandah – where lovers of the grape can peruse the liquid offerings at leisure.
Preceding the verandah is a terrace surrounded by a lavish garden – your stop if you’re headed to the Garden Bar this Friday. When the clock strikes 4pm, tables, chairs and umbrellas are set up here, boasting the best views of the encroaching vineyards, Paarl Rock, the Taalmonument, and, of course, being right in the middle of it – the garden.
A glass of bubbles meets you upon arrival, wherafter you can choose to do a wine tasting (there are seven to try, including the sparkling wine), or order straight off the menu (gin, craft beers and so on).
On the food front, chef Dale Stevens and his Faber team impress even on a wooden board. Cheeses, charcuterie, macerated tomatoes, pitted olives and homemade bread, aioli, and beef-fat butter are filling (and delicious) enough for two.
