Boschendal in Winter: A Fun + Delicious Celebration of the Season

Boschendal in Winter: A Fun + Delicious Celebration of the Season

It’s all about the season’s bounty and beauty.

This historic wine estate in Franschhoek is known for giving visitors an authentic taste of farm life – offering a wide range of immersive activities and wining-and-dining experiences amid spectacular surroundings. The farm’s strong focus on ethical and sustainable farming – and its overarching respect for nature – shines through in everything they do. All of which makes Boschendal a Winelands destination that shouldn’t be missed.

Its famous vineyards aside, Boschendal abounds with a delicious variety of fruit from its various organic orchards. The citrus trees are laden with juicy treasures and the harvest is currently underway. “We love the Citrus Festival; it’s the second one we’ve done, and it’s going to be bigger and juicier,” says marketing manager, Anja du Plessis. With a range of citrus-themed activities and events, there’s no better place to stock up on vitamin C!

Zest for life

Boschendal Winter Events: Citrus Harvest

Freshly picked in the orchards, oranges, lemons, mandarins and limes are destined to be used in the estate’s kitchens by the chefs and bakers in any number of tasty ways. You’ll find citrus ingredients popping up on The Werf Restaurant’s sharing-plates menu and in the picnic baskets, while the Farm Shop also stocks citrus-inspired baked goodies, sweet treats, cordials, condiments and preserves to take home.

Boschendal Winter Events: Citrus Harvest Experience

If you’re keen to pick your own fruit straight from the trees, join the harvesters every Saturday in July for a tractor ride into the orchards. It starts with a welcome citrus cocktail or mocktail, and then you’ll get to pick your bounty (including 1kg to take home) – all for R60. It’s limited to 30 people per hour-long picking session, so booking a slot is essential.

Afterwards, settle in for a farm-fresh picnic basket filled with seasonal delights. A cash bar will be available, along with lawn chairs and picnic blankets.
