Back by popular demand after a sold-out event in 2019, keynote speaker Christo Brand is returning to The Cellars-Hohenort hotel for an evening in celebration of former president Nelson Mandela. Taking place on 21 March 2020 in The Conservatory at the five-star hotel in Constantia, the event comprises a six-course dinner, accompanied by a talk by Madiba’s friend and former prison warder.
A menu inspired by Madiba
After welcome drinks at 7pm, guests will be treated to a unique dinner featuring a combination of Mandela’s favourite foods as well as dishes inspired by his time on Robben Island. The six-course dinner starts with an amuse-bouche and bread baked in a tin, followed by two starters: Soft Egg and Potatoes (crispy potatoes, smoked potato, fynbos herb essence and coal dust) and Rock Pool (grilled octopus, pickled calamari, black mussels and seaweed).
The main meal also comprises two dishes: a modern twist on pap, Roasted Mielie Pap Under the Stars (roasted pap, corn purée, grilled corn and chakalaka) and Chicken Curry (a Malay-spiced seared chicken ballotine served with a curry velouté and apricot chutney).
Dessert of rum and raisin ice cream with homemade biscuit crumble and a koeksister will round off this commemorative feast.
About Christo Brand
Christo, now an author, is one of the former prison guards responsible for Mandela during his time in prison. He arrived on Robben Island, where Mandela was imprisoned, in 1978, and in 1982, he was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison along with Mandela. It was here where they developed a close bond, a friendship that lasted right up until Madiba’s death in 2013. Throughout the evening, Christo will give guests a rare glimpse into the life of South Africa’s best-loved icon, in a relaxed and comfortable setting.
Christo’s book Doing Life with Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend in 2014 will be on sale on the evening.
Join the celebration of the life of an extraordinary man who championed human rights. A percentage of the proceeds of this event will be donated to Sisters Incorporated, an organisation in aid of women, teenagers and children in crisis.
