First Thursdays Down South: Get The Buzz in Kalk Bay + Muizenberg
A new neighbourhood joins the creative party.
By Inside Guide • 31 October 2023
The First Thursdays phenomenon, which has been lighting up Cape Town’s city centre for over a decade, is launching in the South Peninsula on 2 November 2023. An initiative of the Cape Creative Collective, they promise all the buzz and artistic spark – with sea views and a dash of surfer culture.

Galleries, shops, restaurants and bars in Muizenberg and Kalk Bay will welcome visitors with special events (or just their inherent creativity and quirkiness). Expect art exhibits, performances, live music and lots of good food and drinks specials.

Don’t miss
- Re/Vision at Kalk Bay Modern, an exhibition of SA photographers from the 1960s to the present day. There is also a sculpture and ceramics exhibition.
- Ink Box Art (down Memory Lane in Kalk Bay), to see a bold and different exhibition that includes ceramic robots, ocean-plastic art, Lego portraits, paper sculptures and laser-cut works.
- Pop in to see the art at Bob’s Bagels, Slow Life Studio tat-shack and Carltopia (surfboards), as well as the eclectic Artvark Gallery.
- In Muizenberg, there’s Blue Planet Fine Art (for local artists) and Gallery South in Atlantic Road (local and Pan-African art), which also has a performance space. Also check out SPG Kitchen (Sue Pam Grant’s studio-gallery).
- The Commons on the beachfront has a gallery filled with works by locals, including macramé mandalas, paintings and drawings. There will also be Gabi Motuba’s experimental vocal performance, “The Sabbath”, and drum ’n bass by FrogTown.
- For more live music and cool drinks, head to The Striped Horse (Muizenberg) and in Kalk Bay, The Brass Bell and Cape To Cuba.

To keep you fuelled up, pop in at the neighbourhoods’ favourite restaurants, including Salt and Sirocco in Kalk Bay, and in Muizenberg, Joon and Dimples Dumpling House (Palmer Road), Harvest Café, Tortuga Loca Mexican and new arrival Bang K in York Road. The iconic Bluebird Garage Market will be open, and rumour has it Hudson’s on the beachfront will have karaoke… And don’t miss the chance for a tipple at Muizenberg’s oldest pub, The Village Inn (Church Street).
