Fishers of Hope
Lara Foot’s new play deals with hope, choices and upliftment.
By Sharon Kariwo • 24 June 2014
After debuting at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, Lara Foot’s Fishers of Hope is coming to the Baxter Theatre. A multi-award-winning writer and director, Foot has produced a string of successful plays, including Tshepang, Karoo Moose and Woyzeck, so theatre-goers are in for a treat.
Set “somewhere in Africa”, the play revolves around Ruth (Lesedi Job), who is married to John (Phillip Tipo Tindisa), a fisherman whose leg is bitten off by a hippo, rendering him unable to work.
Inspired by Darwin’s Nightmare, a documentary about choices, hope and upliftment, the story is poignantly told in Foot’s inimitable style, with textured imagery and a rich soundscape of authentic African music.
