Hazendal Jazz Club: An Evening of Jazz + Food + Wine in Stellenbosch

Sophisticated interiors, warm service and delicious food-and-wine offerings make Avant-Garde at Hazendal Wine Estate the ideal venue for an evening of soulful jazz, during which a clutch of well-known local musicians takes the audience on a journey of old favourites and new rhythms.

Then it’s off to the evening’s main event, a top-drawer meal at Avant-Garde restaurant while you enjoy a live-jazz performance.

A symphony of tastes

Executive chef Michélle Theron has created an intriguing three-course dinner that combines Russian and South African flavours. The breadboard kicks things off: Babushka bread, served with whipped citrus-infused butter; followed by a choice of garlic and lime halloumi salad, beetroot-and-blueberry-cured salmon trout, or smoked duck breast for starters.

For mains, diners can opt for slow-braised Karoo lamb, roast chicken Ballotine, Cape seafood potjie, or baked cauliflower and potato gnocchi, with a peppermint crisp Faberge or pavlova ending things on a sweet note.

The 2022 programme begins with a headlining performance on Wednesday, 26 January by Penelope Radsma. Hailing from Cape Town, the acclaimed jazz vocalist has a passion for bringing the glamour and romance of the Golden Age to the stage, with her smooth vocals and creative arrangements.

She will be accompanied by some of South Africa’s most exciting jazz talents: Zeke le Grange on saxophone, Brathew van Schalkwyk on piano, Wesley Rustin on double bass and Kevin Gibson on drums.

Doors open at 5.30pm, dinner is served at 6.30pm and the show begins at 7pm. Tickets cost R550 per person (including gratuity) and can be booked via email bookings@hazendal.co.za. Only 50 guests will be accommodated (for social-distancing purposes).
