Joostenberg Wine Estate: Lamb + Steak Wine-Tasting Suppers
Steak and cabernet sauvignon, or savoury lamb and aromatic syrah…
By Inside Guide • 07 July 2025
A historic farm that has been in the Myburgh family for six generations, Joostenberg retains its informal and welcoming tradition of hospitality. Whether you visit for a wine-tasting in the cosy “wagenhuis” tasting room, or head to The Kraal restaurant for a sumptuous three-course lunch (served family style under the trees and stoep of the farm kraal, or in the tasting room in winter), you immediately feel part of the family. Winemaker Tyrrel Myburgh farms the vines organically, regenerating the soils, with free range flerds (mixed flocks/herds) grazing between the vines, and seeking out pure expressions of the Joostenberg terroir in his wines. This winter he’s hosting two one-off wine suppers, preceded by informal tastings of various vintages.
Cabernet and steak supper

There’s no more classic combination than cabernet sauvignon and steak, a match made in culinary heaven. For all red-wine and red-meat lovers this is a convivial occasion to sit down with the family, who share their stories as you taste your way through several vintages of Joostenberg Philip Albert, the estate cabernet sauvignon, and tuck into crusty fresh baguette, Dalewood butter, herbed labneh, olive tapenade and garden crudités. A hearty steak (the beef from Joostenberg’s own pasture-reared cattle) with a cabernet and mushroom sauce, chips and salad is paired with the 2020 vintage. And there are warm guava madeleines, dark chocolate truffles and lemon meringue tartlets to go with coffee afterwards.

Syrah and farm lamb supper

Aromatic syrah and savoury lamb is another classic pairing, the roast lamb perfectly cooked by the kitchen team from The Kraal. The evening starts with an informal tasting of a few older vintages of Joostenberg Estates’s Klippe Kou Syrah, with crusty fresh baguette, Dalewood butter, liver paté, spicy aubergine and crudités to enjoy with them. The current vintage is then paired with a hearty main course of the estate’s free range farm lamb. The lamb comes with farm tapenade and a touch of chili, soft Lowerland polenta and a garden salad. To finish nibble on almond financiers, apple tartlets and dark chocolate truffles with coffee.
