Taste several vintages with the winemaker.

A historic farm that has been in the Myburgh family for six generations, Joostenberg retains its informal and welcoming tradition of hospitality. Whether you visit for a wine-tasting in the cosy “wagenhuis” tasting room, or head to The Kraal restaurant for a sumptuous 3-course lunch (served family style under the trees and stoep of the farm kraal, or in the tasting room in winter), you immediately feel part of the family. Winemaker Tyrrel Myburgh farms the vines organically, regenerating the soils (with free range herds grazing between the vines) and seeking out pure expressions of the Joostenberg terroir in his wines.

This weekend is dedicated to a special themed tasting of the premium Joostenberg Estate Bakermat, a beautifully crafted red blend that is medium bodied and complex with notes of dark berry, fynbos and fennel. The name means birthplace or cradle in Dutch and pays homage to Joostenberg, the family’s home for so many generations. The varieties used in the 2020 vintage are syrah, cabernet sauvignon, mourvedre, touriga nacional and merlot, from vineyards that are 18 – 20 years old. Sit down with winemakers Tyrrel Myburgh and Mia Burger and taste the current vintage alongside older vintages to explore how the wine matures and develops with age.
Good to know Order a light lunch of local cheeses, garden salad and freshly baked breads to go with your tasting (R150). Or reserve a table for the 3-course farm lunch at The Kraal (R485). Booking is essential.

There’s no better classic combination than cabernet sauvignon and steak. For all red-wine and red-meat lovers this is a convivial occasion with the family, tasting your way through several vintages of Joostenberg Philip Albert, the estate cabernet sauvignon, and then sitting down to a hearty steak and chips supper after the tasting.
