Is it a plane? Is it a bird? Is it Superman? It could be all three at the 2018 Cape Town International Kite Festival that takes place on 27 and 28 October 2018 at the Zandvlei Nature Reserve in Muizenberg. Expect to see brilliantly coloured kites of all shapes and sizes at the 24th edition of Africa’s biggest kite festival.
Rise Up is this year’s theme, highlighting that everyone is born with the potential to rise up beyond the circumstances they are dealt. With expert kiters from seven countries taking part, visitors are assured of a first-class visual extravaganza: giant kite displays, kite-fighting competitions, and more.
No kite? No problem. There are plenty available for purchase, or you can simply make your own at any one of the free kite-making workshops that take place on both days, and welcome adults and children. You’ll even learn to make your a traditional Cape swaeltjie (swallow) kite.
Bring a picnic or grab some grub from the market stalls, food trucks or in the tea garden. Plus there’ll a free supervised toddler zone, funfair rides available for kiddies, live entertainment and competitions.
Organised each year by Cape Mental Health, the event aims to raise awareness and money towards helping people with mental health problems in underprivileged communities. There’s no better time to have fun and give back!
