This wildly popular arts festival, now in its 23rd year, is on from 8 to 15 April 2017.

Every year thousands of culture vultures descend upon the Karoo town of Oudtshoorn for a week-long festival of over 150 shows. Also known by its Afrikaans abbreviation, KKNK (Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees), as most of the performances are in Afrikaans, it is one of the largest arts festivals in the country, attracting a cross-section of South Africans.

Don’t-miss highlights of the 2017 festival

Asem A classic story of love in a time of destruction written by the late Reza de Wet. Set in the last days of the South African war where patriotism is the ruling order of the day, a mother and daughter must find subtle ways of surviving the chaos that surrounds them.
Uitkampteater A celebration of short stories, intimate theatre productions and innovative theatre design spanning continents and genres.
Liewer In this adaption of Patrick Marber’s Closer, Tertius Kapp (winner of the Hertzog prize) puts love clichés under cross examination as he dissects the lives of four characters.
Buite Land The story follows two men attempting to live their lives free from their cultural, historical and religious backgrounds. Jacques, an Afrikaans anaesthesiologist working in Pietermaritzburg and Sizwe, a Zulu student and choreographer in KwaZulu-Natal meet and begin a journey of shared consciousness. Written by Neil Coppen in partnership with Markteaterstigting and Royal Court in London, this drama is not to be missed.

As in previous years, the festival spills into the streets of Oudtshoorn, with Baron van Reede Street, the traditional heart of the KKNK, given a new lease on life. In addition, the Rivierbuurt (an open-air terrain next to the Grobbelaar’s River) is where festival-goers will find food and wine stalls and a fun fair, with concerts by popular artists, and a playground and entertainment for kids.

While you’re there

Drop off the kids at the designated amusement areas while you browse the over-400 stalls selling everything from food and drink to clothes and memorabilia, then take part in the gourmet tasting experiences. Come two days earlier, or stay a few days after to experience all the amazing activities Oudtshoorn has to offer, such as a visit to the Cango Caves or an ostrich farm.
