Pop-up dining at this historic Stellenbosch wine farm

Healthy, hearty cuisine awaits under the ancient oaks.

If you’re an avid alfresco diner, you might already be familiar with Uitkyk Wine Estate on the R44 between Stellenbosch and Paarl. The estate’s vintage-inspired picnics are the perfect summer outing, where lunch-goers can sprawl out on the laws of the old manor house – one of only three 18th century, double story, flat-roofed, Georgian-style houses still standing in South Africa.

In addition to the lovely basket-and-blanket dining experience, guests now also have the option of tucking into healthy, hearty cuisine at the estate’s pop-up restaurant until the end of April. Pikant Catering and Events offers a light and fresh lunch menu that’s available to enjoy at the tasting room. Or opt for a tapas-style picnic under the ancient oak trees opposite the manor house.

Uitkyk Wines

Build your own platter from the large selection of tapas, either to create a custom picnic basket, or line your stomach while wine tasting.

Uitkyk Wine Estate Food

Mains include bacon-wrapped sirloin skewers and hearty salads, that range between R89 and R140. Moms and dads will be happy to know that the little ones are specially catered for with hot dogs on a stick, Nutella and banana sushi, quesadillas and mini Greek salads.

Those with a sweet tooth simply can’t leave without ordering the candy board. It’s all sugar and childhood nostalgia.

Did you know A wine farm is only allowed to call itself an estate if all the grapes that go into the production of the wine are grown, harvested and bottled on the farm itself. This gap in what I thought was a well-rounded knowledge of wine, was shared by Uitkyk’s wine maker, Estelle Lourens, during a food and wine pairing at Arugula bistro, which takes place on the first Tuesday of every month. Cheers!

Hello. This sounded lovely so we went yesterday. You need to correct your article. You cannot enjoy the described pop-up restaurant offerings “under the ancient oak trees opposite the manor house”, only at tables outside the tasting room – not the same at all!

      Hi Jeanne
Apologies for the confusion. We have followed up with Uitkyk and can confirm that only the tapas can be enjoyed on the grass (as part of a picnic). The article has been updated to reflect this correction. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.
